DR SANDOR HENG

DPsych Clinical, AHPRA Clinical Psychologist, AHPRA-approved Supervisor (Clinical Psychology), CSAC, CGAC

Profile

Dr Sandor Heng is a skilled and experienced dual diagnosis clinician. He has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and has worked in both private and public health sectors in Australia and Singapore. Though he describes himself as a behaviourist by heart and was schooled in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, he generally adopts an eclectic approach in treating addictions and mental health. By focusing on a strengths-based approach, he blends evidence-based practice with practice-based evidence to achieve clinical outcomes. He has a special interest in co-occurring disorders (addictive disorders and mental health disorders), and his philosophy of therapy is to be the best version of oneself, which he practices in his own life.

Prior to joining Promises, Dr Heng was the sole psychologist at the National Addictions Management Service (NAMS) in the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for 7 years and was the team lead for the NAMS Inpatient Program. Dr Heng currently sits on the Board of the Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association (SANA) and is the Chair of the Rehab & Reintegration Subcommittee. He is also an Associate Faculty in the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), where he teaches the Addiction Module in the Masters of Counselling Program.

In-depth

Dr Sandor Heng is a Psychologist with General Registration and Clinical endorsement with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA), since 2010. He is also an AHPRA board-approved supervisor. He attained his Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) qualifications at Griffith University in Australia and completed placements in New South Wales Health and Queensland Health during his postgraduate training. He has also worked in the capacity of a dual-diagnosis clinician within the Gold Coast Drug Council (GCDC) drug rehabilitation facility, and in private practice in Queensland.

Dr Heng returned back to Singapore in 2013 and joined the Psychology Department in IMH before moving to the National Addictions Management Service (NAMS) in 2015. At NAMS, he functioned as a Senior Clinical Psychologist and was the team leader of the NAMS Inpatient Counselling team. He has experience in providing both individual and group therapy, and conducting assessments, within the inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition, he has helped to develop both inpatient and outpatient programs at NAMS.

Given his exposure to various treatment settings and modalities both locally and abroad, Dr Heng has seen a wide variety of clinical presentations with varying levels of complexity. He approaches each case with a biopsychosocial-spiritual framework, and emphasis is placed on the uniqueness of each individual. As he enjoys working with individuals in recovery, he is an avid supporter of the peer support movement. In the past, he was regularly invited to be part of the interview panel for the Peer Support Specialist (PSS) program by the National Council of Social Services (NCSS). He also supervised PSS candidates when they were on completing their placements. His belief is that peer support is as important as professional services in the treatment of addiction, and the maintenance of recovery.
