In-depth

Steven S. Naarden is an addiction recovery coach at Visions by Promises.  He is also a leadership coach at INSEAD’s MBA Programme. He runs his own executive coaching company in Singapore and is a practicing singer and musician.

Steven studied musicology at the University of Amsterdam, and holds an MSc in Consulting and Coaching for Change from INSEAD. He was awarded an SNHS diploma in Drug & Alcohol Counselling, and a certificate in the Psychology of Addiction and Recovery from Stanford Medicine.  He also holds a Windows on Addictions certificate from MindWealth 360; a certificate in the Fundamentals of Analytical Psychology from ISAP Zurich & APSS Singapore), and a certificate in Jungian Coaching from the ISJCC. Steven was a member of the Tavistock Institute’s 2022 Leicester Group Relations Conference: Task Authority Organisation. He is also a certified NLP trainer, first aider, and psychological first aider.

Steven grew up in the Netherlands and the US and subsequently lived in the UK, Switzerland, and Singapore. He speaks fluent Dutch and English and conversational German. After living on an island in the Scottish Hebrides, he had a stint as a lay monk in a monastery in Wales and a much enjoyed but short-lived career as a professional musician in London. Steven’s business career spanned twenty years, managing finance and HR projects across the globe for UBS, Chevron BP, Deloitte in the UK, and Blackrock in Singapore. As an ACRA registered director, he helped a Scottish company establish itself in APAC; opening its Singapore office, recruiting, and managing a local team and regional client relations and partners. Wanting a change, Steven moved to Switzerland to study Jungian psychology and worked for the Kusnacht Practice as an addiction counselor, before moving back again to Singapore.

After growing up as a bilingual “third country kid” with formative experiences in different countries, and traditions and marrying into an Indian family. Steven has an expanded worldview, interpersonal sensitivity, intercultural awareness, and consequently an intimate relationship with change. As a global nomad, Steven also understands the feelings of rootlessness and restlessness, not belonging to one nationality or culture that can complicate the transitions we all have to make in life.

Steven believes that we are driven by unconscious patterns and as such his approach is trauma-informed and rooted in psychodynamic and archetypical concepts. Steven aims to help his clients to ford the river between unconscious and consciousness, becoming better able to cross from one life phase into the next and from addiction and dependency into self-actualization.

For his clients, as well as himself, Steven is passionate about walking the road less traveled, doing the ‘Work’, and successfully making the transitions life requires from us. Steven aims to befriend growth and learning, not the habits that keep us stuck or the thoughts that keep us small.
